“URMILA”
Although the Epic Ramayana is more about
Ram, Sita, Laxman, Bharat, Hanuman, and Ravana, the character of Urmila (
Laxman's spouse ) is as important as hers was the ultimate sacrifice made when
her husband Laxman goes in a 14-year voluntary exile with his brother Ram and
Sita. Asking her to stay back in Ayodhya to look after the senior members of
the royal household. Hiding the deep sadness within her heart, she diligently
discharges off her duties as an ideal daughter in law.
The dark night scene in my creation
symbolically depicts the dark period that she passing through in her life in
the absence of her husband Laxman although being surrounded by all the pomp and the glory of the palace. Her husbands Sirpeich ( head jewelry ) lying beside her
depicts the eagerness with which she awaits her husband’s return.
Simultaneously her own sparkling Tiara (coronet) on her pillow represents the burden she carries in dispensing her duties in his absence.
